These are remarkable days in Zermatt where for the second time in a fortnight the resort is cut off from the outside world, except by helicopter, with road and rail connections closed due to the extreme avalanche danger.
Snow conditions are excellent – potentially, with a 2-3m base depth, but all slopes have been closed and no lifts operating for the past few days due to that 5 out of 5 level on the avalanche danger scale.
However the area says it hopes to open some slopes, after they are sure it can do so safely, tomorrow 23rd January.
