What has been certified by the Guinness World Records team as the biggest ever firework to illuminate the night sky anywhere in the world has been set off over Steamboat Springs ski resort in Colorado.
The 1,270kg firework was fired from a five-metre long mortar and flew nearly 70 metres above the resort before exploding.
Steamboat was in the middle of a weekend of very heavy snowfall at the time, which saw more than four feet (1.2 metres) of snowfall land by Monday.

According to The Steamboat Pilot & Today publication, the team behind the firework had worked on its development for seven years. They had hoped to launch it a year ago, as part of the annual Winter Carnival, but the firework exploded inside the mortar without taking of.
The previous largest firework, weighing about a quarter less than the Steamboat firework, was set off in the United Arab Emirates in 2018.
