Where’s The Best Snow In Italy For New Year 2017?

Italy reported some of the best snowfalls in Europe just over a week ago when up to 60cm of snow fell in the extreme West of the country along the border with France.

Unfortunately that has not continued over Christmas with no real snow reported in the last seven days and currently there’s nothing forecast for the week ahead either, although a change in the weather is widely expected next week.

Snow cover is very different between the Western (Alps) and Eastern (Dolomites) sides of northern Italy with some of the best conditions in Europe at present in the West where resorts like Monterosa (above) report 2m deep cover on upper slopes, to areas like Alta Badia with just 0-20cm of (mostly machine made) snow in the Dolomites (below).

As with much of Europe, despite this thin cover, ski areas have managed to open large numbers of pistes, using snowmaking to provide adequate cover as temperatures have largely been low enough, it just hasn’t snowed since November.  Val Gardena, with similar snow stats to its neighbour Alta Badia, is pictured top and below for example.
