It’s nearing the end of the 17-18 ski season in Switzerland and indeed a number of resorts have already closed.
But snow depths in the country are amongst the deepest they’ve been this century, in some cases for many decades, and Engelberg still has Europe’s deepest base at 7.1m (24 feet) – it’s still got another month of its ski season to run too.
Many other Swiss resorts have 3, 4 even 5 metre plus base depths, however many will close this weekend, although some will stay open to the end of month and even in to May, Zermatt, year round.
There have been forecasts of significant snowfall this week and in some cases the snow is already falling, with temperatures staying low, but forecasters seem to be rolling back on initial expectations of up to 60cm/two feet more snow by the weekend – not that any Swiss resorts really need any more snow.
