Switzerland’s Verbier and top US resorts Mammoth and Vail are among the resorts that have started their 24-25 ski seasons this weekend.

With early heavy snowfall in Western North America, the continent’s largest resort Whistler Blackcomb has announced that it will open for the season a day earlier than planned, this coming Thursday 21st November, rather than Friday 22nd.

“The first snow has covered the heights of the ski area and the heart of the resort, bringing a coat of white that heralds the start of the season and the excitement of putting on skis. The Lac des Vaux slope is ready to welcome winter sports enthusiasts for the first turns of the season!” a spokesperson for the famous Swiss resort commented, adding, “Thanks to the sub-zero temperatures, our snow guns were able to produce quality snow, to offer optimal sliding conditions. What’s more, we recorded around twenty centimetres of fresh snow at Lac des Vaux, enough to kick off the season in wintry conditions. Early bird skiers will be rewarded with a coffee and croissant on the first day of the season. A 20% discount is applied to the Verbier sector 1-day ski pass on all weekends in November.”

About 20 ski areas are already open in the Alps and Scandinavia including big names like Adelboden, Engelberg, Gstaad, Kitzbuhel, Levi, Murren, Obergurgl, Ruka, St Moritz, Saas-Fee, Solden and Zermatt. The French 24-25 ski season is expected to start next weekend at Tignes and Val Thorens with snow forecasters expecting up to a metre of snowfall on high slopes ahead of then.
