The International Ski Federation (FIS) has announced that applications have been received from Crans Montana in Switzerland, Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Germany and Austria’s Saalbach Hinterglemm to host the 2025 Alpine Skiing World Championships.
Generally regarded as the biggest event in Alpine ski racing outside of the winter Olympics, the bi- annual championships took place in Are, Sweden, earlier this year with the 2021 event due to take place in Cortina d’Ampezzo and the 2023 competition in Courchevel and Méribel.
The candidates are required to attend an FIS briefing in Croatia later this month and submit complete bid dossiers by September 1st followed by meetings in Zurich in October after which proposals will be fine-tuned. An FIS evaluation report will be distributed to the national ski associations in April 2020 ahead of a full FIS meeting in May next year when council members will select the world championship hosts.
All three candidates are also previous hosts; Crans Montana in 1987, Saalbach in 1991 and Garmisch in 1978 and 2011.
Trondheim in Norway is the only applicant for the 2025 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, while Russia’s Krasnoyarsk is the sole bidder for that year’s freestyle, snowboard and freeski worlds.
