The BRITS 2018 came to a close today with the ski competitions wrapping up and it was two familiar faces which were back on top of the podium.
Kirsty Muir could lay claim to being the outstanding athlete of this year’s event as she took out her third park and pipe event of the week.
Not content with first place in Tuesday’s Big Air, nor yesterday’s Halfpipe victory, Muir was the outstanding performer in today’s Slopestyle and once again stood atop the podium. Muir was also crowned winner of the Ritblat Endeavour Award for her efforts in the Picture Big Air, meaning she is taking home £1250 in prizemoney from this year’s event.
The 13-year-old continued to show versatility and confidence beyond her years with her switch 900 safety into right 720 impressing the judges who scored her highest on the day.
“Third overall title this week – I’ll spend the prizemoney on my training,” said Muir. “Not sure of my plans after The BRITS; I think there’s a chance of some other camps so we’ll just see.”
Fifteen-year-old Olivia Burke joined Muir on the podium for the third time this week, adding a silver to her bronze medals in Big Air and Halfpipe. Burke displayed both way rotation and delivered a 720 with solid safety grab to finish second, while Kirsty’s 12-year-old sister Fiona grabbed third place after combining creativity on the rails with rotations both ways.
Also going to top spot on the podium for the second time this week was Chris McCormick who had already claimed the Picture Big Air on day one at The BRITS. The Slopestyle podium was a reflection of the GB Park and Pipe pathway coming to fruition with all three place-getters debuting on the World Cup scene this season.
Standing out from the rest of the field with the hardest rail trick of the day, a 270-on pretzel 270-out, McCormick also delivered a massive right 1260 double blunt.
“Slope course was perfect today – three good jumps and a rail… what more could a boy ask for?!,” said McCormick. “There were many good skiers in the competition today, but I’m glad to take the title. More training ahead now – off to Livigno to ski on the air bag.”
McCormick finished ahead of Sam Ward who already had two third-place finishes to his credit in Big Air and Halfpipe. The 18-year-old performed three different doubles with well executed grabs to complete a fantastic week in Laax.
The final place on the podium went to Harris Booth, 21, whose standout trick was a double 1260 blunt into switch double 900 Japan.
