Ski amid Switzerland’s highest Mountains in Saas-Fee/Saastal
Saas-Fee/Saastal is a unique ski destination surrounded by 18 four-thousand-metre peaks and ski areas at snow-sure altitudes of 1500 to 3600 metres. The holiday region includes the car-free village of Saas-Fee, at an altitude of 1800 metres above sea level, which everyone has seen in the video for Last Christmas by Wham!, filmed here nearly four decades ago.
The Saas Valley is located in the canton of Valais in the south-western part of Switzerland. and is made up of four villages including Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund, Saas-Almagell and Saas-Balen. Each has a unique traditional charm and its own attractions and activities.
Saas-Fee has always been car-free and attaches great importance to sustainability. Visitors driving here can park their car in a large car park at the entrance to the village and then forget about it for the duration of their stay.
The Saas Valley is famous for its breathtaking mountain scenery, with many 4,000-metre peaks surrounding the holiday region, including the locals’ favourite mountain Allalin (4027m) and the Dom, which at 4545 metres is the highest mountain entirely on Swiss soil. The highlight is the impressive Fee Glacier, which you can also explore on a glacier trek.
Winter Experiences
Along with great skiing over a huge area, there’s lots to do off the slopes. It includes winter hiking with 60 km of trails, snowshoeing, glacier adventure tours, alpine canyoning through a stunning local gorge, long toboggan runs you can access by ski lifts, ice climbing, zip lines, treasure hunts and cross-country skiing.
Saas-Fee/Saastal is easily accessible by train and bus. Snowsports fans from the UK can take connecting trains from London to Visp for a comfortable and super convenient journey. For arrivals by air, the transfer takes around three hours by public transport from Zurich, Geneva, Basel or Milan Malpensa.
