Still More Huge Snowfalls in the USA

Patrick Thorne

12 Jan 17

The snowfall is reaching seriously big numbers now in parts of Western North America, particularly in the USA, after another week of exceptional heavy snow brought up to 2m/7 feet more snow top some areas. That’s on top of similar snowfalls last week and a very snowy December.

Mammoth Mountain in California (top) has become the first ski area in the world to reach a 5m base depth and most other ski areas in the state have huge bases too such as Homewood (pictured above).

It’s also dumping in Jackson Hole (video below) with 47cm (19”) of new snow yesterday, 115cm (46”) in the latest storm total, and 770cm (307”) for the season and it’s only early January.

All the snow is causing some practical problems with some resorts in California and Colorado forced to close due to factors including access road closures, avalanche dangers and buried ski lifts.

Further north in Canada there’s been less fresh snow (20-40cm) over the past week and temperatures have been very cold (-20C or colder) but snow conditions are generally excellent (Whistler below).

On the East Coast conditions are generally very good too.  Tremblant in Quebec, with a 3m/10 foot base has one of the deepest bases in Canada and south of the border things remain good in Vermont and other eastern ski states after all the snow there over the past six weeks.
