“Skiers can be forgiven for becoming paranoid about snow, it’s the one essential ingredient for their holiday choice. However, years of scaremongering is driving many skiers to miss out on late season opportunities to ski, often at the best prices all season,” says Laura Hazell of Ski Beat, who organise chalet ski holidays to snowsure resorts in France.
“British skiers tend to fit their ski holidays into the peak dates, from Christmas through to the half term, and this puts pressure on ski holiday companies and resort infrastructure, when a better understanding of the ski season would alleviate this restricted booking pattern,” Laura continues, adding, “It is a shame that many skiers have become nervous of booking away from high season, and so are losing out on some great deals, when the one thing they can be sure of this year is plenty of snow. Most Europeans know that spring is one of the best times to ski, any time until mid-April. Not only are prices keener, but the weather is kinder, slopes less crowded, there are longer daylight hours and conditions can be amazing, with a solid base of snow.”
Chris Thompson, director of OVO Network, which specialises in authentic mountain resorts in France and Switzerland, notes that this year spring is looking especially good for several additional reasons.
“With Easter falling very late this year, March is set to be much quieter on the slopes. School holidays aren’t pushing up demand, so as a result skiers who can get away in March can enjoy fantastic ski conditions and some great prices. Our partner chalets already offer exceptional value, with facilities such as hot tubs, saunas and home cinemas. Now, many are offering additional discounts in March, adding to the appeal of grabbing a quick week on the slopes before the end of the season.”
