It’s snowing in the Alps on the higher slopes! Forecasters have predicted up to 60cm could fall at some areas by Monday, although pictures and video posted so far seems to show more of a dusting of fresh snow.
However it’s very welcome after a long hot summer which saw snow melt completely from some glaciers in the Alps, exposing the normally snow-covered-year-round ice below to hot sunshine. Several summer ski areas were forced to temporarily close last month because of this.

Ski areas that are currently open include the Hintertux Glacier in Austria’s Tirol (where the snowman pictured below was made yesterday), Passo Stelvio in Italy and Saas Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland.
About six more Austrian glaciers are due to open in a few weeks for autumn skiing if conditions are good enough.
