Austria has seen the most fresh snow of the ‘Big 4’ Alpine nations this week.  The Arlberg region (video below from Tuesday Jan 3rd) was the first big Austrian area to report on the new cover, reporting 20cm of snow in the first 24 hours.

It started snowing in Austria on Monday and hasn’t stopped since, by Thursday morning resorts were beginning to post ever more significant snow accumulation stats.  Pivcture top is from Lech on the morning of Thursday, January 5th.

Although the fresh snow is very welcome, particular for those who like to freeride off piste, most Austrian areas had had most of their groomed slopes open through the dry December up to now thanks to extensive snowmaking on an early November snow base.

Other ski areas to report good snowfall tallies so far include 20cm at Ischgl (pictured below before the fresh snow started), Pitztal (32cm), Solden (30cm), Ski Jewel area (30cm), Bad Gastein (42cm) and Saalbach (40cm).

Forecasters expect the snow to keep falling through the week ahead building bases still further.
