Snowfall Ends Spring in the Alps

Heavy snowfall is being reported on Alpine glaciers the day before summer starts (by the meteorological measure of the seasons).

The Hintertux glacier in the Austrian Tirol region, which aims to open for snowsports every day of the year, has reported 20cm (8″) of snowfall so far today.

Snowfall Ends Spring in the Alps

It’s one of five ski areas currently open in the Alps, along with the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise which can be accessed from Cervinia and Zermatt year round, Les 2 Alpes in the French Alps, and two other Austrian glaciers, the Kitzsteinhorn and Molltal.

A sixth option, Italy’s Passo Stelvio, had been due to open for its 2024 summer ski season tomorrow but had delayed to next Thursday due to the high volumes of snow needing the be cleared from access areas and made safe for snow sports.

You can also ski at three glacier areas in Norway or at one of four areas still open in the US, or one in Japan.

The southern hemisphere’s 2024 season has also started early in South America with huge snowfalls in the Andes and Patagonia and is due to start tomorrow (June 1) in Southern Africa and New Zealand.
