Ski To The Sun (Nearly)

Italy’s giant Dolomiti Superski region has released data on slopes usage last winter.  With 1200km of piste is one of the biggest lift pass systems and although it suffered a slight dip last winter in common with most of the continent due to the challenging snow conditions, it still sold the equivalent of  9,339,166 day ski passes and recorded 137 million ski lifts used.

With the latest lift tickets also able to track usage the region reports that skiers clocked up a total 239 million kilometres of slopes covered – almost the equivalent distance of skiing from the Earth to the Sun and back! The average elevation gain covered by a person in a day was more than 4000 vertical metres and the average distance covered by a person was 25.5 km of slopes.

Dolomiti Superski also found that on average a guest only used the same lift 2.4 during a six day stay.

“As there are 450 lift facilities within the whole area, this data demonstrates the choice of undertaking long journeys on skis, crossing from one valley to the next without having to take the same lift,” reads a statement from the region.
