Austria saw a snowy end to April with some resorts receiving over a metre of snow in the penultimate week of last month (Much more than most other parts of the Alps), and snow again in the last few days of April. Some are wishing there’d been as much snow earlier in the season when all the areas were open rather than just the dozen or so still operating to the start of May.
Obergurgl was one of the resorts that posted a powder alarm for more than 25cm/10 inches of new snow in 24 hours reported on the last Friday of April, but like a few other areas including Ischgl (pictured bottom), that was just good timing for its final weekend of the season, it’s closed in May.

But Austria does have eight glacier ski areas and seven of them remain open in to May with several staying open in to June and beyond. Thanks to the late April snow they’re in great shape too.

The Molltal and Pitztal (which has Austria’s highest runs) glaciers are just open for the first week of the month the Dachstein, Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn and Stubai glaciers are open to June (when the Mollrtal re-opens after its brief closure), or beyond and the Hintertux glacier is open year round.
