Very optimistic forecasts of up to 1.5m (five feet) of snow on Europe’s highest slopes at Zermatt, made last weekend, have spectacularly failed to arrive with only a dusting of snow arriving, as has been the case across Switzerland, and the forecast now for very low temperatures but little fresh snow.
Here’s Warren Smith Ski Academy in Verbier.
Cover remains fairly good (the best in three years for Christmas week) though on the pistes. Zermatt’s wider ski region (below) has 250km of runs (Out of a max 260km) currently open for example.
There has been some snow with Lenzerheide claiming the most with 20cm of fresh on Monday, Andermatt claimed 10cm on Tuesday. Most Swiss resorts don’t have much cover on lower runs or any snow in resort. Saas Fee has about the best numbers with 30cm in resort and 115cm on upper runs.
As in France there has been some extreme weather too. Crans Montana was closed on Tuesday due to strong winds. Engelberg is pictured below.
