Most ski areas in Austria have closed for the season so it must seem ironic at some that have struggled to provide good snow conditions for much of the winter that heavy snow has been falling this week, right down to the valley floors.
Several dozen of Austria’s bigger and higher resorts are still operating though and some have reported really big snow accumulation.
Ischgl is pictured top, Lech above, video from St Anton below.
Mayrhofen for example, which is still open, has had no snow at resort level for some time nd currently only has 60cm/two feet left on higher runs but it reports 45cm/18 inches of snow in the past few days and describes on piste conditions as excellent.
Resorts further north have done better still though with Lech, reporting 90cm/3 feet of fresh snow since Sunday, reporting the most.
Although it seems like mid-winter at last in Austria (when it seemed like spring back in mid-Winter) and resorts are seeing more snow than they did at Christmas, it is still a month in to spring so there’s freeze-thaw conditions once the snow clouds move on with the best snow high up and the best conditions in the morning.
