American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin moved further into uncharted territory on Sunday when she took her 95th World Cup win, in the slalom at Jasna in Slovakia.
Shiffrin became the most successful ski racers of all time last season when she overtook the previous record 86 wins that had been held by Sweden’s Ingemar Stenmark for almost three decades.
Shiffrin now has 1209 points in the Women’s World Cup Overall standings, more than 500 points more than her nearest competitor Petra Vlhova. Unfortunately though Vlhova won’t be scoring any more points this season having fallen in the first run of a GS race on Saturday, a race in which Mikaela eventually finished second behind Sweden’s Sara Hector.
Jasna is Vlhova’s home resort where a gondola and ski run is named after her and thousands of fans in her trademark orange beanie hats were waiting at the bottom of the course, so here injury unfortunately brought the mood down.
As well as getting closer to a position of being the first alpine ski racer to score 100 wins at World Cup level, Shiffrin, who turns 29 in March, has the possibility of joining a group of elite athletes who have scored 100 or more world-levels wins in any and all sports.
The FIS report that Sunday’s win was also Mikaela’s 150th visit to the winner’s podium.
