Sweden’s northerly resort of Riksgränsen is re-opening this week for a special summer solstice ski celebration that includes the opportunity to ski or snowboard under the midnight sun.
The famous resort, the world’s most northerly of its size, located well within the Arctic Circle, opens for its ski season in late February each year after the period of 24-hour Polar night has ended. It then stays open for about three months, to late May, by the end of which is it enjoying 24-hour daylight at its northerly latitude.
Skiing and snowboarding under the midnight sun is then offered several times a week for the final few weeks of its season in May, but it also re-opens, if there’s enough snow, in late June for midnight sun skiing at midsummer.
This year it reports the snow as 70cm deep still and that five runs, serviced by three lifts, will be open, with additional freeride terrain also available.
