Still-open ski areas in the western US have been reporting record snowfall totals for May this week.

The snowfall arrived on the West Coast at the weekend bringing up to three-feet (90cm) of snow to ski areas in California.

It then continued inland to states including Colorado and Utah with still-open resorts including Snowbird (pictured in the past few days) and Solitude reporting up to 30 inches (75cm) of snowfall over the past few days and “midwinter conditions”.

The US has more ski areas open through May than any other country with about 15 resorts still going in states including Arizona, California, Colorado, Oregon, Utah and Vermont.

Record May Snowfall in USA

As well as being the biggest ever May snowfall totals in some states, they’ve taken several centres including Utah’s Brighton and Snowbird  past the 600” (15.25 metre) seasonal snowfall total to date mark, and after a poor first-half of the season, led some areas to say their snowfall totals are now in their 10 best of all time.

Famous name resorts still open include Breckenridge, Copper, Mammoth, The Palisades, Solitude  and Winter Park. North of the border Banff’s Sunshine ski area and Whistler are also still operating.
