Chamonix may be one of the world’s best known ski resorts, but it also lies at the heart of a valley with a soul, surrounded by spectacular, beautiful nature. Many who visit quickly grow to love Chamonix and keep coming back, so what’s the big attraction?
Well there’s the buzzing alpine town itself, this winter celebrating 100 years since it staged the world’s first ever Winter Olympic Games.
Most are here for the world-class skiing of course, with snow-sure conditions from December to May as 90% of the skiing is above 2,000m.
Whilst Chamonix has forged its reputation on the outstanding off-piste possibilities, the valley also offers plenty of great intermediate-level cruising terrain, tree-lined trails, snow parks and several excellent beginners’ areas.
All of the skiing takes place with the spectacular backdrop of the Mont Blanc region all around you. Epic trips include a cable car ride to the famous Aiguille du Midi at 3,842m, with its 360° breathtaking panorama, also the starting point of the world famous Vallee Blanche descent.
Ski can choose between the local LE PASS or the broader UNLIMITED ski pass which includes the longest glacier descent in Europe as well as skiing in both Italy and Switzerland. The earlier you book, the better the ski pass discounts!
World Cup ski races play a big part in the annual rhythm of the ski season here, with music festivals, ski touring and freeride events also playing their part.
Chamonix also boasts a thriving music scene and gastronomy inspired by multi-cultural influences and a huge variety of facilities, activities and excursions on offer.
Despite the liveliness of the town itself, the surrounding Chamonix Valley is located within three natural reserves and is also the most densely glaciated area in the Alps, making it a sanctuary for wildlife. Chamois, ibex, deer, white hares, black grouse and ptarmigan are among the local mountain inhabitants and snow-shoeing excursions or back-country ski tours with local guides and nature-specialists give visitors the chance to connect with this exceptional natural environment in the heart of the Mont-Blanc Massif.
Excursions can be made on the historic cog railway to the Mer de Glace (sea of ice), France’s largest glacier, or take the Mont-Blanc Express panoramic train to visit our outlying villages, from where marked winter hiking trails will lead you to frozen waterfalls, picturesque valleys and lots of great cafes and restaurants for coffee and cake!
Of course, falling in Love with the Chamonix Valley and reconnecting with the natural world is nothing new. One of the original Alpine destinations, travellers have been visiting this stunning and spectacular area for over 250 years, inspired by the glaciers and the breathtaking mountain scenery. From the first ascent of Mont Blanc in 1786, to the first winter Olympic games in 1924, the Chamonix Valley never ceases to draw mountain lovers from around the world.
