Welcome To Skiing And Snowboarding In The Tatry Mountains, Slovakia

Debbie Gabriel

04 Jan 16

Snow is on the slopes and the temperature is falling – winter has arrived in Jasná. Approximately half the runs and lifts are open, with the rest set to open in time for Christmas. It was a blue-sky day in Jasná yesterday, the attached webcam shot shows the quiet slopes at Chopok – Západ with low cloud down in the valley. The good news is that temperatures at the top of the mountain are set to stay around the freezing mark for the rest of the week.

Four flights a week with Wizz Air

Building on the success of last season’s flights from London Luton to Poprad-Tatry, Wizz Air will again be flying skiers and snowboarders direct to the Tatry Mountains, but this season the flights will run four times a week instead of three. Fly on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday or Sunday and a one-way ticket costs from £18.49, including taxes, fees and cabin baggage (plus a generous 32kg for pre-paid checked luggage). Poprad-Tatry airport is just 40 minutes from the ski slopes of Jasná . For more info, visit wizzair.com

Fantastic value holidays

Taking the family to Jasná for a ski and snowboard holiday couldn’t be better value. There are always deals and offers running on accommodation packages, such as 20% off bookings made 45 days in advance, and all the extras are much cheaper than elsewhere. For example, a six-day adult Jasná lift pass is €145 (approx £104), while passes for 12-18-year-olds are €115 (approx £83) and for under 12s are €100 (approx £72). Ski rental for a week starts from €75 (approx £54) for skis/board and boots. And eating on the slopes is also great value – main courses at the Rotunda Restaurant at the top of Mt Chopok start from €4 (approx £2.80). FIS World Cup skiing returns to Jasná

For the first time in 32 years, the FIS World Cup is returning to Jasná . On 5-6 March, 2016, the women’s giant slalom and slalom races will be held on the Mt Chopok slopes from Luková and local hopes will be resting on Slovakian favourites Veronika Velez Zuzulová and Petra Vlhová having recently a very promissing form/results. The last race to take place on Mt Chopok was the Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in February 2014; prior to that was the women’s FIS World Cup in 1984.
The world cup weekend is not only about the race with some exciting side events planned, with stages, music and surprises for all visitors.

Wellness in the Liptov Region

What makes a Liptov holiday unique is a special combination of skiing and thermal water fun and relaxation. You can choose between two large water parks Tatralandia Aquapark and Gino Paradise Besenova or Spa Lucky, with treatments and healing mineral waters.  There are not many better ways to recharge  batteries after a hard days skiing by soaking in natural 30C thermal pools.
41 pools, 45 slides and toboggans alongside plenty of saunas and wellness complexes will keep both adults and children happy, especially when entry is included with your lift pass, if you have decided not to ski that day. More info and accommodation facilities can be found on www.visitliptov.sk

In every suite there are two double-bedded bedrooms and a shared bathroom upstairs, while downstairs is a large open-plan living room with fireplace, sofa bed for two further people, and balcony, kitchen and dining table for six. Winter rates start from €139 per room per night with breakfast based on two sharing. For more information, visit: chaletsJasná.sk

Three new slopes have been created, plus snowpark imrovements

A ski route, no. 42 Priehyba Jasná, running over the southern side of Mt Chopok will be extended and converted into a new blue ski slope, no. 2b Májová Priehyba – Jasná, while a new connection between Jelení Grúň and the slalom ski slope will be added for less skilled skiers, ski slope no. 12a Jelení Grúň. The new ski slope is well located and requires only a little snowmaking to be fully covered. Over on the southern side of Mt Chopek, a new downhill slope has been created, traversing the ridge and providing easier access to Krupová. Skiers and snowboarders taking this trail will enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the hilly region of Horehronie. By connecting ski routes on Mt Chopok a 6,800m-long ski trail has been created, suitable for families with children. These three new slopes are all rated blue.
