Better-Value Exchange Rates At London Airports Than Regional Airports
Research by foreign exchange company Caxton FX has found a major difference in exchange rates offered by in-airport exchange bureaus depending on which airport you fly from.
This difference, at its most extreme, can be more than 13%, with the survey of 10 major UK airports finding a family of four exchanging £1,000 would get $136 more at Heathrow (where the best rates were found) than they would at Bristol (the worst) – equivalent to two meals out for a family of four in America.
When it comes to buying euros, Heathrow and Gatwick top the table for best value where (on the day the survey was carried out) travellers got €1.07 for every pound. At the bottom of the table, West Country fliers travelling though Bristol got just over one euro (€1.0008) for each pound, and Scottish fliers got a similar rate going through Edinburgh (€1.0070).
Caxton FX are keen to point out that holidaymakers could save an additional €116 or $130 by using a prepaid currency card to exchange £1,000 compared to the best rate available at an airport exchange bureau. Caxton FX sell such a card.
“Currency exchange bureaus at the airport have a captive audience, so they can offer outrageously poor rates and are still confident that people will purchase foreign currency from them,” said Rupert Lee-Browne, CEO of Caxton FX.
