Why you should take a train to your ski holiday

After a slow start, the snow has finally started falling across Europe, so if you’ve been delaying booking your 2016 getaway – why wait any longer? Tickets are still available for trains to ski destinations throughout France, Italy, Switzerland and Austria for anyone thinking of making the most of the fresh snow.

Travel to Bourg St Maurice for resorts including Les Arcs, Tignes and Val d’Isere or to Moutiers for La Tania, Courchevel and Meribel. Take in the stunning scenery travelling at high speed by day, or maximise your time on the slopes by travelling overnight and arriving early on Saturday morning, while those who have flown are still making the lengthy transfer from the airport.

Although on face value, the journey by train looks longer than a flight, when you start to factor in journey times to the airport, check in time, time spent waiting for luggage and ski gear on arrival and then the tedious transfer from the airport to the resort, you’d be surprised at how little there is in it. And it’s not just about the journey time – rail passengers can get up and move around, making a visit to the buffet car for a snack or drink. There’s ample leg room, even in standard class and perhaps one of the biggest bonuses for skiers, is that skis and snowboards travel free of charge – there’s no additional charge for luggage.

If France is your ski destination of choice, make your booking between Friday 8 January and Monday 18 January to take advantage of a new special offer. Fares from Paris to Bourg St Maurice, Moutiers and Aime La Plagne will start from £22 for a limited period only. Travel must be taken between Saturday 9 January and Thursday 4 February, so don’t delay!
