North Lake Tahoe is an area unique in the skiing world. Not only is it one of the most stunning natural landscapes in the world, but it is a ski area with huge variety and is home to the nation’s largest concentration of downhill ski resorts.
North Lake Tahoe consists of 12 ski towns that span Nevada and California, each with its own distinct personality and community, providing an incredible diversity when it comes to both ski terrain and resort atmosphere.
With 20-30 feet of average annual snowfall, North Lake Tahoe has a history of skiing dating back to the 1850s, when Scandinavian prospectors introduced skiing to the area and conducted America’s first ever organised ski races. In 1960, the Winter Olympic Games were held here at Squaw Valley and the area has now developed into a winter paradise, with a plethora of activities and unique experiences to entertain all ages.
This winter, North Lake Tahoe has invested further in new snowmaking equipment, energy-saving technologies and a huge calendar of winter events, all of which cements its reputation as an area with a focus on sustainability, modern luxury and family enjoyment.
One of our favourites of the 12 ski resorts is Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows, a beautiful ski area which is covered by the new IKON pass, a multi-resort pass offering skiers access to up to 38 incredible destinations! Similarly, Northstar California is home to the Epic pass, which gives access to a staggering 65 resorts across the world. So, if you want to get the most bang for your buck when it comes to your ski pass, North Lake Tahoe is definitely a destination to consider!
Off the hill, a unique combination of nature and tradition have led to a number of fantastic dining opportunities, from sophisticated gastronomy to family value fun, as well as an impressive number of craft breweries and brew pubs.
However, what really sets North Lake Tahoe apart when it comes to winter holidays is its commitment to fantastic events and aprés activities. This winter, families can attend a number of festive events, from Noel Nights at Northstar California to Northern Lights at Incline Village and all the magical sleigh rides, live music and holiday celebrations in between.
What’s more, a full calendar of events will be in operation throughout the winter. The 4th Tahoe Film Festival will be celebrating environmental and foreign films, whilst the music festival WinterWonderGrass, taking place at Squaw Valley, will feature an epic combination of mountain fun, musical performances and craft beer tasting.
