A new year-round ski resort has been completed in China less than a year after the country unveiled the world’s biggest indoor snow centre yet in the North-Eastern city of Harbin, according to local reports.
However the new Yunmen Mountain All-seasons Resort is located further south near the city Qingzhou in Shandong province, across the yellow sea from the Korean peninsula. It also has artificial surface ski slopes rather than real snow and outdoor ski runs rather than indoor.
The stylish resort design from architectural firm ATAH has slopes following the natural landscape and designed to blend in to the environment but ending 12 metres above the ground on the roof of a base building at the bottom of the hill.
Located within the Gilu mountain region, 500km south of Chinese capital and 2022 Winter Olympics venue Beijing, the ski centre has five main ski slopes covering a combined area of 17,000 square metres and covered with what appears to be a Chinese domestic dry ski slope surface.
Ski and board slopes are pitched at 10-15 degrees with tubing runs, including one within the building, at 6 – 20 degrees.
The facility is reported to be earmarked for China’s national snowboard team training ahead of the 2022 Olympics as well as for public recreational use.
