A new ski centre is set to open in South Wiltshire next month.
The South Wilts Ski Club has converted a former tractor workshop at Bapton, between Salisbury and Warminster and installed a conveyor ski slope.
Local media reports that the conveyor ski slope machine supplied by Dutch company Maxxtracks has now been installed and a full-time ski instructor hired with opening day set for August 5th.
Conveyor ski slopes operate in a similar way to a runners treadmill. The dry ski slope surface continually moves up towards the descending skier so they can ski for as long as they like without taking a lift up.
The machines can vary the speed at which the ski carpet moves and sometimes the angle of the slope to create a faster, more challenging descent for experienced skier, or very gentle experience for novices.
There are several other similar machines operating at other locations in the UK and all over the world. They’re particularly popular in the Netherlands where there are more than 50 centres, some with as many as five machines.
The social side is a popular part of the urban ski scene there, and South Wilts Ski Club are planning a club house.
The South Wilts Ski Club have also sourced rental equipment and will offer half-hour and hour-long slots on the slope.
