The first stage of a massive overhaul and upgrade of ski lifts above Grindelwald and Wengen in Switzerland’s stunning Jungfrau Ski region is due to begin operations this December.
A new gondola lift with a new terminal in Grindelwald will open on 14th December providing much improved access to the Männlichen ski sector. The state-of-the-art gondola with 111 ten-passenger cabins aerial gondola replaces a more than 40 year old lift, which at the time of its installation back in 1978 was the longest ski lift of its kind in the world with a total length of 6.2 kilometres.
The new lift will double the transport capacity from 900 to 1,800 guests per hour and cut the journey time from 30 to 19 minutes.
The lift is the first of several in a huge CHF 420 million (£345m) multi-year upgrade known as the V-Cableway project which from December 2020 will see a second new lift installed to transport skiers from the same new terminal to Eigergletscher station.
