It has been snowing heavily in the Alps for the past 48 hours – the third wave of serious snowfall since early September, raising excitement for the season ahead.
40-60cm of fresh snow is expected to fall over the next few days at many areas and most top resorts are excitedly posting pictures of their new white coats on social media.
Several Austrian centres have posted ‘powder alarms’ for 20cm+ of snowfall in a 24 hour period. Solden, which will stage World Cup races the weekend after next on its glacier, has posted two successive ones for 26cm then 20cm in the past two 24 hour periods. It has already been open a month.
Two more glacier areas – Diavolezza near St Moritz in Switzerland and Cervinia in Italy are scheduled to open this weekend.
Elsewhere in the ski world Ruka in Finland opened on Monday and Sunday River in Maine, USA has announced it hopes to open next Monday.
