Despite its modern facilities and efficient operations, Friedrichshafen is actually one of Germany’s longest-established airports and the cradle of the country’s aviation industry. Yet its importance as a route into the northern Alps continues to grow.
More and more airlines are adding more departures from the UK airports to this increasingly popular airport on Germany’s southern border, close to ski resorts in both Austria and Switzerland.
This winter easyJet are launching a new route from Gatwick, joining established operators to the airport, BA and Monarch.
More than 50 leading ski resorts in Austria, Germany and Switzerland are a short transfer away from Friedrichshafen airport. The famous Austrian Arlberg area, including the resorts of Lech and St Anton, are among the closest, less than 90 minutes away, but the airport is also close to numerous Swiss resorts including Davos, Laax and St Moritz as well as western Austrian choices including Ischgl and the Pitztal glacier.
EasyJet say they expect to carry 10,000 people in their first winter of operation, with Saturday and Sunday flights from Gatwick each weekend commencing on 12 December 2015.
“We are excited to add Bodensee Airport at Friedrichshafen to our network,” said Neil Slaven, easyJet’s UK Commercial Manager. “It is a gateway for some of the best ski resorts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy with more than 250 ski resorts within a three-hour drive, and for this reason we are sure it will prove a popular service for both skiers and snowboarders looking to explore the region.”
