America’s Pacific Coast ski areas have had an incredible start to the 2022-23 ski season with major storm after major storm moving in from the ocean.
The latest, by some counts the sixth of recent weeks, is one of the biggest yet and is forecast to deliver up to six-feet (1.8 metres) more snow to Californian ski areas, which are already posting the world’s deepest snowpacks.
The Palisades (pictured above) have reported 36″ of new snow at their Alpine base and 35″ on the upper mountain over the past 24 hours.
“It’s a little strange to get more snow at the base than the upper mountain, but that can be explained best by yesterday’s winds gusting up to 160mph!” a resort statement explains, adding, “High winds and heavy snowfall will continue through the day, before tapering off later this evening.”
Heavenly Mountain (pictured above and below) stated, “Well, it’s not exactly breaking news that we got absolutely dumped on,” continuing,
“We are up against some pretty gnarly conditions this morning. Avalanche mitigation teams are working hard and crews all over the mountain are digging to try to open what we can. We don’t have power at California Lodge which is also presenting us with some difficulties. Gondola operations will be closed for the day. Thank you all for your patience and cooperation as we work to try to get you an unreal pow day. Our team is incredible so the next time you see them be sure to give them a huge thank you. In the event we can make this happen, please be safe, follow all signage, ski with a buddy, and check road conditions before taking off.”

After these huge snowfalls it has kept snowing across Western North America with more and more resorts passing the 400″ (10 metres) snowfall season-to-date totals in February 2023. The now have the best conditions anywhere in the world for spring skiing this year.
