Marmot Basin, the ski area that’s close to Jasper, was not damaged by the catastrophic fire that destroyed parts of the famous Canadian ski town.

The ski resort lies about 10 miles south of Jasper, as the crow flies, and there was a nervous few days wait before it became clear that the fire had not reached the ski area.

“We now know that infrastucture at Marmot Basin has not been affected by the Jasper Complex Wildfire. All facilities, buildings and ski lifts are completely intact. Our first priority continues to support our staff during this profoundly difficult time. We are eternally grateful for the unending and selfless efforts of so many who have and continue to tirelessly protect our people and community. Our intention is to operate our ski area for this coming season. This will take much work on the part of many and we can’t wait to see our friends back on the slopes this winter,” a statement from the resort explained.

Approximately 30 per cent of the buildings in Jasper are estimated to have been destroyed on damaged by the wildfire, which hit the town with very little warning travelling at high speed with flames reported to be up to 100 metres high. 358 of the town’s 1,113 structures were destroyed.
