March skiing – what’s the big deal, right?

It’s official – we’re in the midst of the most ‘meh’ time of year. Hot wattle bottle dependency is still a thing and you can’t step outside without some form of precipitation or wind (or both) pummelling your face. Add to that the lacklustre celebrations around Valentine’s Day – Clinton Cards’ solo battle to lift the nation’s morale – and Pancake Day – ok guys, it’s pancakes. Literally just pancakes – and you’ve got a recipe for tears.

But we’re not hankering for summer quite yet. Fast-approaching is the golden month for snowsports and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s why you should leave behind the grey British weather and fall in love with March skiing this year:

March means sunnier slopes

Joy in its purest form is swooping down a snowy mountain, blue sky above, with the warm sun beating down. And when it comes to rays of the good stuff, March delivers. Team this weather with the great snow that we’ve had all season and you’re onto a winner.

Think longer days on the slopes, less layers to contend with and afternoon après in the sunshine. We’ll cheers to that. Even if you’re not bothered about your goggle tan being ‘on fleek’, skiing in the sun is always preferable over facing a freezing cold blizzard mid-run.

March means lower prices

Skiing can be an expensive hobby so it certainly pays to be tactical about when you choose to hit the slopes.

March counts as low season so prices are considerably cheaper. As well as flights and accommodation generally costing less, many resorts lower their lift pass prices to entice the locals up the mountains once the bulk of tourists have gone home. So, save your money for lunch on the mountain, an extra round at après or even, for the organised among you, put it towards next year’s ski trip.

March means quieter slopes

With half-term been and gone, and Christmas a thing of the past, March paves the way for empty pistes. In short, this means more time on the slopes doing what you love. Nobody likes queuing en mass for ski lifts, elbows out, trying to bag a ride while attempting to keep the gang in tow.

Equally, we’d rather not worry about dodging multiple ski school snakes weaving down the mountain and then battling for a table at a self-service lunch place. Not for us. You know that awesome sensation of standing at the top of a run, looking down, and knowing it’s all yours for the taking? Yep? Well it’s out there waiting for you.
