California’s Mammoth Mountain ski area say they’ll remain open for skiing and snowboarding daily, weather permitting, through to Sunday, August 6th.
Mammoth Mountain opened for its 2022-23 ski season last November so by the time it closes will have operated for nearly nine months …and be only three months away from the start of its 23-24 ski season. It previously promised to stay open through July and hadn’t named a season-end date.
It’s one of only two ski area currently still open in North America, the other the Palmer Snowfield above Timberline Resort on Mt Hood in Oregon.
Mammoth’s decision to keep going came after the resort received more than 700 inches/20 metres of snowfall last autumn to spring. It’s only the third time in its almost seven-decade history it has stayed open into August.
The snowpack keeps shrinking in the intense Californian sunshine but is still six-feet deep up top. Lifts run out of Main Lodge from 7am to noon daily. Summer sports like golf and mountain biking are available below and it’s possible to combine skiing and boarding in the morning with swimming or surfing in the Pacific in the afternoon.
