Mammoth Mountain in California has opened for the 2015-16 ski season in the past few minutes.
The resort says it is opening a week earlier than scheduled after a recent snow storm brought nearly a metre of snow to its slopes.
It’s a great start to the season for the resort which has suffered from a drought in the region for the past four winters. It’s too early to be sure but this huge powder start to 15-16 could be a sign of the much heralded strong El Nino weather system that’s forecast to bring an epic winter to California over the coming months.
“Great snow making temperatures in the forecast this week will mean plenty of additional snow. At 11,053 feet, Mammoth Mountain boasts one of the highest summits making for deeper, higher quality snow, an absolute freshies galore! We can’t wait to see what else El Nino has in store for us this season,” said a statement on behalf of the resort.
