Killington Opens For Free Skiing in June

There’s not a huge amount of snows left but Killington resort in Vermont says it will re-open for skiing today only (June 1st).  As an added bonus the slope will be free to use, and there’ll even be a free commemorative T-shirt for the first 250 people to turn up.

Skiing will take place on the resort’s Superstar trail where Killington traditionally stockpiles snow to enable it to keep offering snowsports to late in the season (Kit was open to the last weekend in May, the US Memorial Day holiday weekend, and to open early the next season.

The snow can be stockpiled up to 30 feet/9 metres deep in winter so even with average thawing it lasts a long time.

The snow has been moved around by groomers to give a continuous top-to-bottom ski run, although writing on social media resort staff warned that this coverage might not last out the whole day.  Temperatures at the resort are expected to reach 17C this afternoon.

It’s the first time Killington has offered skiing in June for 15 years, last doing so in June 2002.
