Jenny Jones has become Britain’s first ever medal winner on snow, taking bronze in the new Olympic discipline of Slopestyle.
Jones, who has had a long and illustrious career in snowboarding, qualified in the semi finals earlier today and was leading at the start of the second run in the final, going second with 10 girls competing after her.
Two of these managed to top Jones’ points score but Jenny still won the historic bronze.
Jenny Jones has become the first ever British Olympic Snowboard medallist winning Bronze in Ladies Snowboard Slopestyle Finals.
Jenny qualified 3rd in the semi finals earlier this morning, progressing her through to finals. We also saw Aimee Fuller in the semi finals this morning, placing 9th with a score of 37.50 after a double back flip which saw her become the crowd’s favourite.
During finals, Jenny scored an outstanding 87.25 in her second run, but due to starting second, Jenny and the crowd were left with an agonising wait for the final 10 riders for her place in history to be secured. Jenny, the Queen of British snowboarding has won the first Snowboard Olympic medal for Great Britain, and has become the first ever British female to win an Olympic medal on snow.
Jones’ parents arrived secretly in Sochi to see her compete.
It should be acknowledged that many people still regard Alain Baxter’s bronze in the slalom at Deer Valley in the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics as Britain’s first snowsports medal but this was taken from him by the IOC after he controversially failed a drugs test for taking a cold remedy unknowingly bought over the counter in a US chemist.
But this has no bearing on the significance of Jenny’s Jones historic achievement.
