Heavy Snowfall Returns to the Alps

Patrick Thorne

15 Dec 17

Only a day or two after the last huge snowstorms deposited up to a metre of snow at ski areas across the Alps it is snowing hard again and many ski areas have posted accumulations of 20-60cm (8-24 inches) more fresh snow overnight.

The exceptionally snowy start to the 17-18 ski season in the Alps shows no sign of slowing.

Ski areas in Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland have reported big new accumulations with Laax (pictured top) and Murren reporting the biggest falls of the internationally best known ski areas with 45cm (18 inches) so far.

There’s been 30-40cm at areas including Cervinia, Val d’Isere, Les Menuires (video above) Val Thorens and Murren.

The off-piste Avalanche danger is high.

More snow is forecast to continue to fall through the weekend with up to a metre in total expected at some areas.
