If, like us, you’ve been glued to your TV screen over the last two weeks watching the action unfold in Pyeongchang, you’ve probably noticed there’s a definite dominance when it comes to eyewear. Whether you’re watching the slopestyle or the speed racing, there’s an unmistakable yellow/orange glare that you simply can’t avoid. And, from American youngsters Red Gerard and Chloe Kim to racing royalty Mikaela Shiffrin and Aksel Lund Svindal, these fiery goggles are racking up quite the medal tally.
So, what is this new eyewear range everyone’s wearing in Pyeongchang? It’s Oakley’s new limited edition collection, Harmony Fade, and it’s been designed purely for and inspired by, the Winter Games. Developed to celebrate the journey and commitment that athletes make to reach the world stage of competition, Oakley Harmony Fade “honours the path of greatness, while inspiring athletes of all levels to chase the journey of possibility.”
Bold claims right? We popped in to Oakley’s flagship Covent Garden store to see if they really were as good as they make out. (Spoiler: they are awesome). Love it or loathe it, the bold colour scheme that unites all the pieces in the collection is a real showstopper. It features orange to represent the fire that burns inside each and every competitor, and yellow for the sun that lights the path of athletes brave enough to pursue their dreams.
This colour scheme is also partially inspired by Oakley Prizm™ lens technology. Oakley’s Prizm lenses are some of the best I’ve ever used and to learn that this collection are available with Prizm lenses was a real draw. Grounded in decades of research, these lenses make everything vivid and vibrant, revealing nuances usually missed by the naked eye. We didn’t have any snow in Central London, but looking up at those lovely thick London clouds did a great job at proving just how much more you can see with these goggles on. Not to mention the orange tint makes them look super smart.
