There’s been fresh snow in the Alps overnight with ski areas reporting up to 40cm falling since yesterday evening.
For many resorts it’s the first fresh snow they’ve seen since just before Christmas so can be counted as the first of the New year and of the new decade.

Most areas were in good shape anyway thanks to bases built in November and December, but the new snow provides a good fresh cover to their snowbases.
Areas reporting 30-40cm of fresh snow include Adelboden in Switzerland and Alpe d’Huez in France.

Ski resorts in the cross-border Portes du Soleil region have also done well with 25-30cm of fresh snow there and Wengen in the Swiss Jungfrau which hosts the biggest annual event in the country’s ski racing calendar, the Lauberhorn, this weekend, has also had 25cm of snow resulting in the downhill course being shortened.
However some resorts have just had a few centimetres of snowfall, less than forecast.
