After seven weeks with Tignes (pictured above this week) the only ski resort open in France (bar a weekend opening of a 2km run at a centre in the Pyrenees last weekend) , the French winter ski season proper gets underway this weekend with Val Thorens opening.

Things are looking good at Val Thorens with 70% of its terrain due to open for opening day, with Tignes opening more terrain too. Here’s how it’s looking:

In fact conditions are great across the French Alps and Pyrenees it seems, although for most areas there’s still a week or two, and in some cases a full month, until opening day.

Alpe d’Huez pictured above is typical with great conditions and the season there two weeks away.

Courchevel did open on Wednesday, running several lifts free of charge to celebrate how great conditions were, but it was a one-day-only event for now.
