Dachstein Shark Returns Home

The king of the primeval ocean, The Dachstein Shark, has returned to his old hunting ground, now 2000 metres up in the Austrian Alps.

Rather than rely on another few million years of evolution to lift a fossilised ‘ice shark’ up from the ocean bed to the mountain tops, the operators of the Obertraun ski resort used a helicopter capable of lifting 6,500 tonnes to lift the life sized metal replica on to the slopes.

Unlike the original sharks, it’s possible to take a walk inside and climb up and look out through its jaws, and live to tell the tale.  After being installed in the summer as an attraction for hikers, the Dachstein shark is now waiting winter visitors over the snow.
