Nights Are Drawing In

With the midsummer solstice now past us in the northern hemisphere, for skiers we’re into the downhill run to the start of the 24-25 ski season!

The last ski area that had still been operating for the 23-24 season in Europe (Austria’s Molltal glacier), closed last weekend leaving half-a-dozen summer ski only glacier ski areas open along with year-round ski centres Cervinia/Zermatt and Hintertux. In North America only the Timberline ski centre on Mt Hood in Oregon remains open since autumn, last year.

As the days grow shorter though we can look forward to the first ski area opening for it 2024-25 season in just over a fortnight as Saas Fee in Switzerland is due to open for summer skiing. That marks the start of a nine-month season through to spring 2025.

Other glacier ski areas start opening in the Alps from September and usually the first ski areas in the US start to open in late October.  October also sees the first resorts opening in Scandinavia as well as the start of the 24-25 season ski and snowboarding World Cup tours.

Of course in the southern hemisphere it was the winter solstice and the ski season is now fully underway

But for everyone north of the equator the 24-25 ski season will be here before we know it!
