Breuil-Cervinia which offers cross-border summer skiing and boarding in partnership with Zermatt on the Swiss side of the border, which incorporates Europe’s highest lifts and runs, is getting ready for its summer ski and board season which begins next weekend on 25th June and will run to 4th September, 2016.
The skiing at Plateau Rosà is one of the claimants to the title of the largest summer ski area in Europe (Les 2 Alpes makes the same claim) with 25km of ski runs reaching up to 3,899m at the Gobba di Rollin, one of the 10 highest lifts in the world and the highest in Europe.
The Plateau Rosà glacier can be reached from Cervinia town in half an hour. Summer terrain includes ski runs for the experts (World Cup athletes train here) but also runs for less experienced skiers. There’s also the Gravity Park for freestyle ski and boarders.
2016 marks the 80th year of winter sports operations in Cervinia. The local Cervino lift company was founded in 1934 and the first Breuil – Plan Maison cable car was opened in 1936. Today the mountain museum at Plateau Rosà features an exhibition entitled “A Mountain of Work” includes photos and tools used to build the first lift systems in the Breuil area.
