(New lift connecting two former Park City ski areas in to one under construction)
The world famous ski ‘town’ of Park City in Utah will have two rather than three ski areas next winter and one of them will be the new biggest ski area in the USA.
Formed by the connection of two previously separate ski areas, Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons in a $50m project by Vail Resorts, which completed taking control of both areas last autumn, the new company have announced the new combined area of 7,300 acres will be simply named ‘Park City’ – ending media speculation on what the new US’s biggest area would be called.
The new name also simplifies things a lot. Previously Park City’s three areas, only one of which was called Park City (Mountain Resort). Of the other two, one changed its name every few years, and the other is Deer Valley. Now there’s just Park City at Deer Valley.
Canyons, which will now be demoted to a ‘base area’ of the ‘new’ Park City, with the designated title ‘Canyons Village at Park City,’ began life as the small ‘local’s hill’ at the ski town under the name ‘Park West.’
Developers moved in, most notably the once big player in the US ski industry, the now defunct American Skiing Company, which invested large sums expanding the area in to one of the largest in the US. It was briefly christened Wolf Mountain in 1997 adding Utah’s first gondola and a host of other new high speed lifts before being re-named The Canyons and more recently changed its name for a fourth time to drop the ‘The’ and become just Canyons.
Vail Resorts say the new Park City brand will feature a new logo combining the Canyons insignia with the Park City colour palette.
