Thousands of people gathered at about 100 areas across Canada at 10am last Saturday in a valiant attempt to set a new world record for most number of snow angels made simultaneously.
It took 24 hours to calculate exactly how many people took part, but in the end the total of 7,058 unfortunately did not come half way to breaking the record. Bad weather was blamed for the lower than hoped turn out.
The current record stands at 15,851 simultaneous snow angels set in 2004 when children, parents and teachers from 60 schools in the London District Catholic School Board, Ontario, Canada, made 15,851 snow angels simultaneously on 2 February 2004 at 2pm.
The attempt had been organised by the Canadian Ski Patrol which has around 4,500 volunteers working at around 230 ski hills across Canada.
“It’s a marketing tool for us as well because we want people to get to know what we’re doing. Everybody sees the red jackets and they’re not too sure what they’re all about. It’s going to help us do that,” patroller Rich Henschel told Canada’s Global News.
