The gondolas for the new 3S gondola lift serving Europe’s highest ski runs at Zermatt have arrived at the Klein Matterhorn ahead of the lift’s opening in September.

The cabins were carried a long way through Italy to Cervinia before being lifted up to the new lift’s lower station.  There are 25 cabins in total, each containing 28 seats.  A few are to be specially sponsored by Swarovski Crystal and will feature paint jobs encrusted with crystals and see-through floors.

Built of the past three summers (as winter conditions at the altitudes involved were too extreme for construction then), the new lift, the highest of the comfortable high-speed, high-capacity 3S gondola model built so far,  will run along side the existing 3S Cable car, increasing capacity on the route up to the top station at 3821m, from where it is possible to ski 365 days per year, weather permitting.

“Now it won’t take long until the opening of the 3 S Railway in autumn – we are full in the final sprint!” said a lift company spokesperson.

The new lift is scheduled to open on 29th September, 2018
