Ski slopes above 3,000m in the Alps have posted three-day snowfall total of up to three feet this week as cold weather continues to dominate the region.
The biggest totals have been reported in Austria’s Tirol region, which is home to more glacier ski areas than any other.
Hintertux (pictured in the last few days), the only ski area to stay open all year last year, once Covid restrictions had been lifted, has posted 93cm (over 3 feet in 3 days). The Sölden glaciers, which have a ski season usually running from September to May and which this season have been posting Austria’s deepest snowpack has also hit 90cm this week. It has a 3.2m (nearly 11 feet) base on its glaciers.
Engelberg in Switzerland, which often has one of the deepest spring snowpacks in the Alps at 4-6 metres, but this year is well below average, reports 64cm (over 2 feet) of fresh snow, taking its total up to 2.3m on its Titlis glacier. A third Tirol glacier, Stubai, has had just a little less with 60cm (2 feet).
Although the season has ended, or will end after this coming Sunday, at most ski areas in Europe, several hundred will remain open into the latter half of April and the four mentioned above into May or beyond.
