Work is continuing apace this summer on venues for the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games in China.
Although known as the ‘Beijing Winter Olympics’ the competition will be co-hosted by Yanqing and by Zhangjiakou in Hebei Province making up three ‘competition zones’.
The Zhangjiakou Zone, with a total of eight competition and non-competition venues, will be the host for skiing and biathlon staging a total of 50 events in six disciplines (snowboarding, freestyle skiing, cross-country skiing, ski jumping, Nordic combined and biathlon).
It has been announced that the design of competition venues in Zhangjiakou is closely linked with Chinese elements. For example, the ski jumping course at the Nordic Center is designed as Ruyi, an S-shaped Chinese traditional ornamental object and a symbol of good luck.
Currently, 38 construction projects are reported to be underway at Zhangjiakou including the Nordic and Biathlon Centres, the Genting Snow Park and other projects such as event roads and landscape engineering began again after being suspended due to weather. 28 of these projects are reported to be resumptions after the winter break of work begun last summer, with 10 of them new commencements this year.
