Austria’s highest coffee shop, Café 3440, has announced that it will re-open for the summer season on July 14th.
Located at the Tirol region’s Pitztal Glacier, the coffee ship serves homemade, local favourites like buckwheat cake filled with “Grantenmarmelade” (cranberry jam) or a cream cake with the resinous note of the local Swiss stone pine. There’s also Sacher cake as well as the signature glacier snow cake.
Although the food is traditional, the coffee shop is an architectural highlight with a south-facing glass frontage and free-floating sun terrace. Both provide an amazing view of thousands of mountain peaks in the Ötztal Alps and Wildspitze as you enjoy your cake and barista coffee.
The ascent from, the valley takes around 20 minutes on two lifts and its possible to buy a lift pass that includes breakfast for morning arrivals.
“Enjoying breakfast at Café 3440 is an incomparable experience. With the first ascent you are in the glacier ski area before everyone else. The team around hut host Sepp is already waiting for you with a varied buffet of regional delicacies and fragrant coffee specialities,” a Pitztal glacier statement enthuses.
Besides breakfast, the café also doubles as Austria highest registry office and to date 120 couples have said “I do” there so far.
The Pitztal Glacier has one of Austria’s longest ski seasons lasting from September to May and Café 3440 is open winter as well as summer. The 23-24 season dates are 23rd September, 2023 to 5th May, 2024.
